I am honored to accept the position of Principal at Mill River Union High School. One of Mill River’s strengths has always been its ability to connect students to their school, to one another, and to extracurricular opportunities like athletics, theater, and the arts. As Principal, my role is to build on that strength while ensuring every student is academically successful and prepared for what comes next after high school. I clearly heard that staff want to feel trusted and supported, and that matters to me. My approach is to listen, involve staff in decisions, be clear about expectations, and be consistent. At the same time, an important goal is to ensure that students experience consistency across classrooms so that all have access to strong instruction and support. During my first year, I want to take the time to build relationships, learn from the community, and develop a deeper understanding of Mill River High School.
I grew up in Barre, Vermont, attending Spaulding High School, Champlain College, University of Vermont, and Castleton University before moving to Pennsylvania with my family for a few years. Today, together with my wife of 20+ years and our two teenage children, we manage a horse farm and several acres of property “just over the state line” in Whitehall, NY.
My life’s journey is a testament to the power of personal and professional growth. I’ve had the good fortune to have worked various jobs before embarking on a career as a police officer in Richmond and later in Burlington, Vermont, often volunteering at the Vermont Police Academy, where I instructed recruits and veteran officers alike. After a decade of service, my wife and I changed careers. My wife returned to college and entered the nursing field; I then returned to college, earning my first master's degree in Education and joining the teaching profession at South Burlington High School, and later at Monadnock Regional High School in NH. The birth of our daughter led to a brief career pause as I took on the roles of stay-at-home dad, youth sports coach, homeschool teacher, and part-time college adjunct at Northampton Community College. Resilience and determination led me back to the education field full-time, and I moved our family home to Vermont to teach high school English at Fair Haven Union High School and work as a part-time instructor at the Community College of Vermont, Rutland.
After earning my second master’s degree in Educational Leadership and receiving Vermont Principals Association Waddington Leadership training at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, NC, I worked as an Assistant Principal at Rutland Town School before accepting the Assistant Principal position at Springfield High School. My education and leadership philosophy center on helping teachers and students expand their personal capacity, focusing on students first, and ensuring that every team member has what they need to succeed.
In my spare time, I enjoy horseback riding, road cycling, kayaking, paddleboarding, running, and snowshoeing with my family.
